Children's classes

These are the planned children's activities for the Barony of Bryn Gwlad's Candlemas celebration on Saturday, February 2nd, 2008. The time at which each activity will be held will be announced as soon as the schedule has been finalized. You can expect all of them to take place between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Painting in Medieval Manuscripts and S.C.A. Scrolls

Participants will learn how medieval manuscripts were illuminated and how S.C.A. scrolls are made. They will have a chance to view examples of both. (In keeping with the theme of the event, 9th- and 10th-century manuscripts will be featured.) Then they will practice painting medieval motifs for themselves, using watercolors and prepared cartoons.

Skills learned or practiced: wetting cake watercolors, using paintbrushes, blending colors
Materials used: watercolor paper with photocopied motifs, cake watercolors

1:00-2:00 Length of tablet weaving

Try Your Hand at Tablet-Weaving

Tablet-weaving was among the most popular means of producing decorative and functional narrow wares in the 9th and 10th centuries and throughout the Middle Ages. Participants in this class will have the opportunity to try this craft for themselves, making a short length of tape appropriate for use as a hair ribbon, trim on or a handle for a pouch, or similar purposes.

Skills learned: packing the warp, passing the weft, turning cards, reversing turn to eliminate twist
Materials used: size 10 mercerized cotton thread

2:00-3:00 Leather pouch

Make a Viking-Age Pouch

Participants in this activity will make small leather pouches, similar to the one shown at left and to multiple examples from the Viking-Age Danish trading settlement known as Hedeby.

Skill learned: double-needle saddler's stitch
Materials used: leather, waxed linen thread

Table skittles set

Children's A&S competition

There will be an unthemed Arts & Sciences competition for Bryn Gwlad for our youth 12 years of age and younger, sponsored by Lord Vilhiálmr vetr. The winner will be called into court to receive the prize: a table skittles set in a decorated box. This competition doesn't have a theme. Entrants can make toys or games, garb, decorations, camping gear... anything that strikes their fancy. They do have to submit documentation with their entries—at a minimum, a completed copy of the form at http://b-b-fam.home.texas.net/ASform/. Entrants will be expected to display their entries by 11am and will need to gather their entries by 3pm. Each participant will be assigned a three-foot-square section of table as display area. Those requiring floor space or more table space should make prior arrangements with the Candlemas A&S Deputy, Lady Pamphilene of Mistra.
